When you think of crazy fans and atmosphere, one of the first countries that’s likely to come to mind is Turkey. One of their most successful teams ever – Galatasary – have helped cultivate that notoriety amongst football fans.

Their ultras are named UltrAslan, a blending of ‘ultras’ and ‘aslan’ (the lions), and consist of a many smaller fan groups who amalgamated to combine their skills and create a larger, more organised fan group. UltrAslan are renowned for their flares, chants and choreography and take particular pride in making away games a living hell for their opponents at the club’s Türk Telekom Arena.

“Welcome to Hell” is a common slogan used by the fans to intimidate the opposition. Some older readers may remember Manchester United’s infamous visit to the club in the Champions League, where the slogan was accompanied by a seemingly endless show of red flares, creating an intimidating cauldron atmosphere.

The Galatasary fans have been recorded as the loudest fans in the world according to the Guinness world record lot, and have a reputation for confrontations with rival fans, including Fenerbahçe locally, and Arsenal and Leeds United further afield. The hooliganism of these ultras creates both chaos and incredible atmosphere wherever they go!
